Steel task: six best student architecture projects

The jury of the Steel Freedom Architecture Festival chose the best projects of a cultural and business center for Kyiv

On November 27, the final of the already traditional Steel Freedom Architecture Festival, an annual architectural festival within the framework of the National Architectural Student Competition, was held in Kyiv. It was held for the eighth time. You can view the report from last year’s event link.

The organizer of the festival and competition is the association “Ukrainian Center for Steel Construction” (UCSC). The general partner is Metinvest Group.

Competitive nuances

This time, 20 student projects were presented to the jury in the following categories:

• Creation of a business center project in Kyiv. Project customers – UDP and KAN Development;
• Creation of a project for a cultural center in Kyiv. The project’s customers are Perfect Group and Riverside Development.

According to the results of the jury voting, according to the sum of points, 10 best teams in each category passed to the final of the competition. In their decisions, the jury was guided by an assessment of the architectural and structural forms of the project, as well as the nature of the use of steel structures.

“This year we have record highs – in terms of the number of teams and projects (135 teams, 84 projects, 74 of which made it to the semi-finals), in terms of the number of partners and prizes. As one of the jury members said, soon the awarding will take more time than the protection of the participants. Also this year, we have customers from among the leading Ukrainian developers with interesting projects,” said in a comment for GMK Center Vyacheslav Kolesnyk, USCS executive director.

The level of the competition is growing from year to year, and the number of attracted participants is also increasing.

“Last year, we began to involve teachers from specialized universities as curators of teams. In this way, we encourage teachers to advise students, which increases the involvement of teachers and improves the quality of submitted projects. This year, almost 90 teams have shown that they have curators from among the teachers. We are extremely grateful to the curators for supporting the competition – their participation raises the level of competitive works,” said Vyacheslav Kolesnyk .

The winning teams that took 1st, 2nd and 3rd places received cash certificates in the amount of UAH 30,000, UAH 25,000 and UAH 20,000 respectively, as well as gifts from the contest partners.

Business center in Kyiv

In the nomination “Creating a business center project in Kyiv” first place a team consisting of Dmytro Borovyk, Rostyslav Plemyannyk, Elizaveta Valyavska and Oleksiy Prostak (Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture) won.

Second place went to the team, which included: Musa Tofik ogly Heydarov, Yaroslav Nagradny, Maria Husak, Alexandra Shpetnaya, Stefania Oliynyk (Kyiv National University of Civil Engineering and Architecture).

Third place also took a team from the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. Its participants: Alexandra Filipchuk, Victoria Podoinitsyna, Alexey Klimenko, Inna Lysytsyna. Curator – Evgen Tsyupin.

Cultural center in Kyiv

In the nomination “Creating a project of a cultural center in Kyiv” first place took Elena Meleshko (Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture).

Second place went to the team consisting of: Daniil Bachinsky, Alexey Avramenko, Diana Garkavenko, Artem Gromov; curator – Irina Kravchenko (Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture).

Third place took a team from the National University “Lviv Polytechnic”: Vladimir-Maxim Nagornyak, Anastasia Kalinichenko, Ivan Andreiko. Curator – Leonid Voznyuk.

Customers have the right to use competitive solutions as a basis for the construction of facilities. Recall that last year the contestants developed projects of a stadium in Mariupol and a sports and educational complex in Ivano-Frankivsk.

It should be noted that in competitive projects conceptual proposals are given without detailed calculations. However, several projects from previous years are already underway.

“The projects proposed by the participants of the competition, after being finalized by adult designers, are already being implemented,” Vyacheslav Kolesnyk emphasized. – For example, in Mariupol a steel frame residential building, the Center for the provision of administrative services is being designed”.
