The import of coking coal to Turkey fell by 26% in June

In June 2022, the import of coking coal to Turkey decreased by 25.7%, to 213.4 thousand tons compared to the previous month, or 26% less compared to the previous year.

At the same time, the value of these imports increased by 8%, to $114.1 million compared to the previous month and increased by 194.6% year-on-year.

In January-June 2022, the import of coking coal from Turkey decreased by 19.1%, to 2.31 million tons, while the value from these imports amounted to $875.4 million, which is 133.1% more than last year. During this period, Turkey’s coking coal imports from Australia amounted to 1.03 million tons (-20.9%), from the USA – 636.9 thousand tons (-2.9%), Canada – 277.7 thousand tons (- 41%).

As GMK Center reported earlier, the European Union has agreed with Turkey to cancel import safeguard measures against Turkish steel by January 16, 2023, in accordance with the terms of the World Trade Organization. This will increase the production of Turkish steel.

Steel production in Turkey in June 2022 decreased by 13.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, amounting to 2.9 million tons. Overall, in the first half of the year, production decreased by 4.6%, to 18.9 million tons. Consumption of final products in June amounted to 2.6 million tons with an increase of 0.5% compared to the same month of 2021 and 17 million tons with a decrease of 3.4% for the first six months of the year.

Also, in June 2022, Turkish steel enterprises resumed the import of pig iron from Ukraine after the lack of supplies in May. Also in June 2022, Turkish steel enterprises imported 119.1 thousand tons of iron ore from Ukraine, while in June 2021 there were no deliveries.
