Metinvest’s steel is the basis for a new Royal Navy ship

Metinvest Group’s Ukrainian steel is the basis for the new combat support ship Den Helder, which will join the Royal Netherlands Navy. 5 thousand tons of steel were used for its construction: 4.76 thousand tons produced by Azovstal Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol and another 240 tons by Metinvest Trametal, an Italian company. This was reported by Metinvest.Media.

The products were supplied in 2020-2021, before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Cooperation within the project continued with the shipbuilding company Damen Galati (Romania), which is part of the international Damen Shipyards Group, one of the largest shipbuilders in Europe. The company actively supplies ships to the navies of NATO member states.

The Den Helder, which is almost 180 meters long, is capable of servicing up to six other vessels at a time and transporting more than 8 million liters of fuel, as well as food, water and ammunition. Upon completion, it will officially join the fleet on October 1, 2025.

“It is especially valuable that Azovstal’s Mariupol steel was used for this vessel. It is not just metal, it is a symbol of the resilience of Ukrainians and a contribution to strengthening the defense capabilities of our European partners,” commented Natalia Krivoshey, Head of External Procurement at Metinvest-SMC.

Metinvest Group has also provided steel for other military projects, including the Hetman Ivan Mazepa corvette for the Ukrainian Navy.

The company emphasizes that even in times of war, Ukrainian metal remains in demand in projects that strengthen the security of the democratic world.
