Global prices for coking coal fell during the first half of July

Global coking coal prices fell during the first ten days of July against a backdrop of weak demand from China and India.

According to Kallanish, the price of high-grade coking coal FOB Australia stood at $238.9/t as at 10 July 2026 (-1.3% compared with 12 June).

Spot prices for coking coal in China (EXW, Anze) on the same date stood at $297.2/t, up 1.7% compared with 12 June.

Prices for Australian seaborne coking coal, which had risen at the start of this month due to limited supplies of premium-grade coal (PLV), fell at the end of last week against a backdrop of improved supply and low market liquidity.

As for coking coal prices in China, Mysteel Global forecasts that, following a significant rise in June due to supply disruptions, they will fall in July. The raw materials market is under pressure from low demand for steel and declining profitability at steelworks.

The widespread suspension of mining operations across the country last month to assess safety at Chinese coking coal mines contributed to a prevailing sense of optimism in the market; however, the situation has now changed. Mines are gradually reporting a resumption of operations, with coking coal production rising, as are stocks of this raw material at these facilities and in ports. However, domestic supply remains limited.

A further proposed round of coke price increases is currently under discussion in China, which steelworks are still resisting.

As of mid-July, the Indian market for imported coking coal remains inactive, despite buyers’ interest in cargoes at lower prices. A cautious stance is currently being adopted there, pending the government’s decision on whether to extend anti-dumping duties on imported coke.

It should be noted that global coking coal prices rose in June, but this momentum was lost by the end of the month, even despite high quotations on the Chinese market — buyers resisted the price increases.
