Zaporizhstal produced 68 thousand tons of pig iron in April

Zaporizhstal Iron and Steel Works produced 68 thousand tons of pig iron in April after a forced downtime in March, Olexandr Myronenko, the general director of the plant, wrote on his Facebook.

Now the plant is launching the production of a new product – a metal sheet for the construction industry. Once the war in Ukraine ends, this rolled metal will be much needed for the Ukrainian cities infrastructure rebuilding.

In addition, about 230,000 food packages have been made by Zaporizhstal humanitarian hub for Ukrainian cities that have suffered the most from Russian aggression.

More than 600 evacuated residents of Mariupol asked for help and received it at the Metinvest Rehabilitation and Reintegration Center in Zaporozhzhia.

“The Zaporizhstal team brings Ukraine closer to the victory with its peaceful work: with every release of pig iron, every humanitarian flight or support for defenders. Let’s move together to peace and victory,” the statement reads.

As previously reported, from the beginning of March, Zaporizhstal plant was partially frozen. On March 25, the plant restarted the work of the units of the cold rolling shop, skin-pass mills 1700-1 and 1700-2, as well as slitting unit №5. On April 6, two blast furnaces, №3 and №4, were restated too. Later, pig iron smelting began.

At the end of 2021, Zaporizhstal increased its pig iron output by 0.1% compared to 2020, to 4.5 million tons. Steel production decreased by 0.1%, to 3.8 million tons, while the production of rolled products remained at the level the previous year, 3.2 million tons. In January-February 2022, the plant reduced the production of rolled products by 8.7% compared to the same period in 2021, to 502.4 thousand tons.
