Ukrainian Railways in the first half of the year transferred 2.6 million tons of iron ore towards Poland

Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increases iron ore transfer in January-June 2024
through Ukrainian-Polish railway border crossings by 61.7% compared to the same period in 2023 – up to 2.599 million tons. This was discussed during an online meeting of representatives of Ukrainian Railways with Polish carriers, Rail.insider writes.

Transportation of ferrous metals during this period amounted to 803 thousand tons, which is 45.5% less compared to January-June 2023. Transportation across the border of grain also decreased – by 13.7% y/y, to 1.32 million tons.

In general, during the first half of the year, UZ transferred 11.06 million tons of cargo to Poland, which is 36% more compared to the same period in 2023. All Ukrainian-Polish border crossings showed growth. Through the junction Yagodin-Dorogusk, 2.08 million tons of cargo were sent (+71% y/y). The Rava-Ruska-Verkhrat crossing processed 268 thousand tons (+195% y/y). The volume of cargo transfer through the Mostyska-Medik junction reached 2.64 million tons (+22% y/y). The Izov-Grubeshuv conversion rate for cargo handling was 6.08 million tons (+30% y/y).

In January-June 2024, export shipments of US iron ore amounted to 17.87 million tons (+2 times y/y), grain – 18.73 million tons (+43.3% y/y), ferrous metals – 2.46 million tons (+6% y/y). In general, during the period, the railway operator transported 90.26 million tons of cargo, which is 28% more y/y. 44.77 million tons of cargo were transported for export (+58.7% y/y).

In 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, which is 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons less compared to 2022. Transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, grain – increased by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
