UDSC repaired four barges with the replacement of 20 tons of steel

Ukrainian Danube Shipping Company (UDSC) carried out a factory repair of 4 barge sections, using 20 tons of new steel in the restoration work. CEO of UDSC, Dmytro Moskalenko, informs about it on Facehis book page.

“The next repaired units of the non-self-propelled fleet left the slipway of our shipyard. On four section barges, which will soon replenish the tonnage, a factory repair was performed with the replacement of steel with a total volume of about 20 tons and painting of the replaced steel,” said Dmytro Moskalenko.

Now the barges must pass the inspection and receive the Register documents for the right to work for 5 years.

The company plans to repair the self-propelled vessel “Mechanic Yan” and four more barges. Up to 60 tons of hull steel are planned to be replaced on one of the four barges.

“The main thing is that for the first time in many years we are considering the possibility of performing full-fledged repairs. In particular, there is a proposal to make the first two reference barge repairs. This means that all the problematic areas of the hull steel will be replaced in the sections and their full painting will be done,” said the UDSC CEO.

Now the standard work to return the barge to service takes about 25 days. Full hull painting will add another two weeks to that time.

“Thanks to such works on a factory, it is possible to significantly extend the life of the vessel without repairs. Its body will be less prone to corrosion and wearout. That is, fewer operational repairs – less downtime – less costs,” summed up Dmytro Moskalenko.

As GMK Center reported earlier, since the beginning of the year, UDSC increased its fleet by 20%, or 35 barges, compared with the pre-war period – up to 200 units. The company repairs and puts into operation barges that were out of order and were not used

Due to this, in June 2022, the UDSC doubled the volume of cargo transshipment by its own fleet compared to pre-war figures – up to 200 thousand tons.
