Tenaris has begun construction of its second wind farm in Argentina

Tenaris has announced the start of construction of its second wind farm in Argentina, La Rinconada, which is being built in Olavarría, Buenos Aires province. This was reported in a press release from the company.

The project involves the installation of 21 wind turbines with a total capacity of 94.5 MW, and the investment volume is $214 million. The facility is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2025.

Once commissioned, both Tenaris wind farms will supply electricity to the Siderca seamless pipe plant in Campana. The company’s first wind farm, Buena Ventura, also located in the province of Buenos Aires, began operating in 2023.

According to Andrea Previtalli, president of Tenaris in the Southern Cone, La Rinconada will reduce CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons per year compared to 2018 levels. Each of the 21 turbines will have a capacity of 4.5 MW, and the expected annual generation will be about 400 GWh with a capacity utilization factor of 54.5%.

In total, Tenaris’ investment in renewable energy development in Argentina will exceed $400 million over four years. The company is also implementing other decarbonization initiatives, including the installation of a new electric arc furnace with Consteel technology in Argentina, electric heating systems in Colombia, and solar energy projects in China, Italy, and Romania.

It should be noted that Tenaris recently opened its first solar power park in Romania with a capacity of 20 MW. The new facility will supply electricity to a steel mill in the city of Calarasi.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Tenaris reduced its pipe sales by 5% in 2024 compared to 2023, from 4.14 million tons to 3.93 million tons. During the year, shipments of seamless pipes to customers amounted to 3.08 million tons, down 4% year-on-year, and welded pipes – 852 thousand tons (-11% year-on-year).
