In 2022, steel enterprises of Turkiye reduced the import of billets from Ukraine by 66.4% compared to 2021 – to 117.54 thousand tons. Steel Orbis reports about it with the reference to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK).
In December 2022, Ukrainian steelmakers did not ship billets to Turkiye, while in December 2021, 25.26 thousand tons of such products were delivered to Turkish customers.
In general, Turkish steelmakers reduced billet imports in 2022 by 11.2% compared to 2021 – to 2.52 million tons. In December, Turkiye imported 266.54 thousand tons of billets, which is 23.2% more than in December 2021 .
The main supplier of billets to Turkiye is Russia. It accounts for 59.6% of the total volume of deliveries. During the year, Turkish steelmakers consumed 1.5 million tons of Russian semi-finished products. This is 4.3% less than a year earlier.
Ukraine ranks third in the supply of billets to Turkey – 4.7% of the total volume. Oman is in the second place with 247.6 thousand tons, or 9.8% of the total.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2021, Turkiye imported 350.1 thousand tons of billets from Ukraine. The annual indicator corresponds to imports in 2020. During the year, the Ukrainian billet reached 12% of the total volume of billet imports to Turkey.
Turkiye ranks eighth in the world in terms of steel production. According to World Steel, the country in 2022 reduced steel output by 12.9% compared to 2021 – to 35.1 million tons.
