Total production in the CIS countries and Ukraine decreased by 28.4% y/y for the month

Global steel production in December 2022 decreased by 10.8% compared to the same period in 2021 – to 140.7 million tons. This is evidenced by the global rating of 64 steel-producing countries World Steel Association.

Total steel production in the CIS countries and Ukraine in December 2022 fell by 28.4% y/y – to 6.2 million tons.

The top ten producing countries in december 2022, according to World Steel:

  • China – 77.9 million tons (-9.8% compared to December 2021);
  • India – 10.6 million tons (+0.8%);
  • Japan – 6.9 million tons (-13.1%);
  • USA – 6.5 million tons (-8.3%);
  • Russia – 5.5 million tons (-11.3%);
  • South Korea – 5.2 million tons (-11.6%);
  • Germany – 2.7 million tons (-14.6%);
  • Turkiye – 2.7 million tons (-20%);
  • Brazil – 2.5 million tons (-5.2%);
  • Iran – 2.7 million tons (+3.3%).

In 2022, world steel production decreased by 4.3% compared to 2021 – to 1.831 billion tons. The CIS countries and Ukraine in 2022 reduced the total steel production by 20.2% y/y – to 85.2 million tons.

Global steel production in 2022

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2021, global steel output increased by 3.7% compared to 2020 – up to 1.95 billion tons. Ukraine in 2021 increased smelting by 3.6% y/y – up to 21.4 million tons. The country took 14th place in the global rating of 64 steel-producing countries.
