Japan established galvanised steel products imported from two countries are being dumped

The Japanese government has reached a preliminary determination that imports of hot-dip galvanised steel sheets and coils from South Korea and China were being sold at dumped prices, causing damage to domestic producers. As a result, the investigation has been extended by four months, until 12 December. This was reported by Reuters.

The investigation was launched in August 2025 following a complaint by four Japanese steel companies, including Nippon Steel and Kobe Steel. The complainants stated that, due to falling demand and an influx of cheap imports, they had been forced to lower their own prices.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, together with the Japanese Ministry of Finance, will give interested parties the opportunity to submit evidence and comments on the preliminary findings before a final decision on the imposition of duties is taken.

The duration of the investigation, which usually lasts up to one year, has been extended in accordance with a legislative provision allowing for an extension of up to six months.

Hot-dip galvanised steel is used as a raw material for the manufacture of road barriers, building materials, fences and components for household appliances (in particular refrigerators). The investigation does not cover imports from Hong Kong and Macao.

As reported by GMK Center, the Japanese government has announced plans to impose anti-dumping duties on imports of nickel-containing cold-rolled stainless steel from China and Taiwan. This decision was prompted by unfair pricing practices, which have caused significant harm to Japanese manufacturers. The new restrictions could come into force as early as August.
