Spanish steelmakers increased steel production by 8.1% y/y in Q1
In March 2025, Spanish steelmakers increased steel production by 10.9% compared to the same month in 2024, to 1.13 million tons. Thus, the country ranked 16th in the global ranking of steel producing countries (69) by the WorldSteel Association.
The country’s production volumes increased by 9.4% compared to the previous month. In January-March, the industry produced 3.19 million tons of steel, up 8.1% year-on-year. In the first quarter, Spanish steelmakers achieved the highest growth rate among the key EU steel producers, with March production reaching its highest level in two years. This was mainly driven by a pickup in the construction sector, while demand from the automotive industry was limited.
Overall, EU steelmakers increased steel production by 0.2% y/y in March 2025 to 11.7 million tonnes, while in January-March they decreased by 2.5% y/y – to 32.4 million tonnes.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, Spain increased steel production by 3.3% compared to 2023, to 11.82 million tons. In December, Spanish steelmakers produced 870 thousand tons of steel (-14.3% m/m; +16% y/y). The average monthly steel production in 2024 amounted to 985.2 thousand tons, while in 2023 it was 954.3 thousand tons, and in 2022 – 964.4 thousand tons.
