Lawyers are in the final stages of agreeing the deal. The company is preparing for production for defense and energy
The Polish steel plant Huta Częstochowa will soon come under the control of the Polish Ministry of National Defense. Lawyers are finalizing a 120-page agreement that will confirm the transfer of the enterprise to state ownership, according to a report by Dziennik Zachodni.
The authorities emphasize that the plant is of strategic importance as it is the only producer in the country of hardened thick-gauge rolled steel, which is necessary for the defense industry.
After the previous owner, Liberty, declared bankruptcy in 2023, production was resumed thanks to the state-owned company Węglokoks. Since January this year, the plant has been operating at full capacity, restoring supply chains and sales markets. The company is currently valued at over PLN 253 million, and in February, the Polish government recognized it as a strategic asset.
At the same time, the plant is expanding its areas of activity. In addition to defense products, it is preparing to supply special steel sheets for wind energy. Currently, parts are being manufactured for onshore wind turbines, and in the future, for offshore turbines as well. This requires the development of new technologies and the production of longer and stronger blanks.
“We want to develop in two directions: offshore energy and the defense industry,” said Piotr Głuszewicz, vice president for commercial affairs.
Huta Częstochowa also focuses on flexibility. Unlike its Asian competitors, which can only deliver thousands of tons per shipment, the company fulfills even small orders and ensures fast delivery to customers within a 300 km radius.
Legal procedures are expected to be completed in the coming months and the assets transferred to the Ministry of Defense. This should ensure the company’s long-term stability and guarantee that its production capacity will serve the interests of both national security and the energy transition.
Recall that Polish Minister of State Assets Wojciech Balczun said that the government is closely monitoring the situation surrounding the enterprises of steel giant ArcelorMittal in Europe. According to him, if the Indian concern leaves the market, the country may consider the possibility of buying out enterprises, in particular in Dąbrowa Górnicza and Katowice.
