From January 9, 2023, Estonia introduced restrictions on the import of goods from Russia, including steel and pig iron products. This is reported by Interfax with the reference to the Estonian Tax and Customs Board.
“On January 9, the transitional period of sanctions imposed by the European Union on a number of consumer goods originating in the Russian Federation ends, and from Monday their import into the European Union will be prohibited,” the message says.
In addition, the transition period has expired for sanctioned goods, the supply contracts for which were concluded before October 7, 2022. Since January 9, the import of several types of consumer goods into Estonia has been banned for both individuals and legal entities.
Prohibited items must be returned from the border, abandoned or confiscated. Pipes, hoses, building materials, plastic products, tools, etc., are among those prohibited from being imported into the EU.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in October 2022, the European Union agreed on the eighth package of sanctions against Russia due to military aggression on the territory of Ukraine. The new package of sanctions provides for limiting the import of finished steel products and steel semi-finished products from the Russian Federation, as well as limiting oil prices. In general, the sanctions of this package provide for a ban on the import of Russian products to the EU in the amount of €7 billion.
Also, in the 9th package of sanctions, the European Commission plans to add sanctions against the mining industry of the Russian Federation. In the first half of 2022, Turkiye, China and the EU increased imports of pig iron and steel from Russia. The most demanded goods are pig iron and steel semi-finished products.
