AMKR will provide 70 thousand tons of slag for the arrangement of roads along the EU border

PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih will provide free of charge 70 thousand tons of blast furnace slag for the construction of roads along the borders with the European Union. This is stated in the press release of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS).

«The border road is one of the important elements of the border infrastructure, which allows providing better control and responding quickly to changes in circumstances. Also, the availability of roads with improved coverage will allow border protection authorities, not only to react quickly, also to save on fuel costs and the operation of equipment, «the SBGS notes.

The arrangement of border roads became possible due to changes in legislation that provide for the allocation of land along the border to military units of the State Border Service.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih blast furnace slag will be used for the arrangement. Slag gravel is an environmentally friendly material, and Ukrainian Railways will help to deliver it to the border.

Today, the arrangement of roads has already begun – with a length of almost 35 km in the Chernivtsi region and 17 km in Transcarpathia. In the future, it is planned to build almost 700 km of border roads, taking into account adjustments that may arise at the first stage of construction.

«Thanks to the support of the Government, and directly to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, as well as the help of Ukrzaliznytsia and PJSC ArcelorMittal Krivoy Rog, the Ukrainian border will become more protected and controlled,» the border guards summarize.

Only in 2021 year, through the Big Construction project, 225 thousand tons of dump slag of PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih were used in the overhaul of Ukrainian roads. Blast furnace dump slag in road construction is laid in the base of roads, it is also used in conventional road repairs.

The use of ash and slags makes it possible to save UAH 1 billion on road construction. In 2021, the existing road construction programs in the country made it possible to dispose of about 5 million tons of ash and slag. According to the European Business Association (EBA), the level of utilization of such waste in Ukraine did not exceed 8.3-11.7%, while in the EU 45-50% of ash and slag materials are disposed of annually.
