The slag processing shop of the enterprise produces two types of slag

In 2021, 225,000 tons of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih’s waste slag were used as part of the «Big construction» project during the major renewal of Ukrainian roads. «Metalurg» newspaper reports about it.

The Blast furnace dump slag in road construction is the basis of roads, it is also used in ordinary road repairs. Blast furnace slag is processed in the slag processing shop (SPS) of the steel plant, which today is the site of blast furnace shop №1. The shop also produces granulated blast furnace slag, which is used in the production of cement. The products of the unit are in demand from consumers of Ukraine.

According to the head of the SPS, Boris Vorsa, since blast furnace production, which is connected with the work of the workshop, is currently not working at full capacity, the pause in the main activity is used here for equipment repairs. In particular, the facility for the production of granulated slag was repaired here: the crane overpass was renewed, three pumping units were replaced and the foundations under them were renewed, nine hydraulic chute units were replaced, etc.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the ash and slag can save UAH 1 billion for road construction. In 2021, the existing road construction programs in the country made it possible to dispose of about 5 million tons of ash and slag. According to the European Business Association (EBA), the level of their disposal in Ukraine did not exceed 8.3-11.7%, while 45-50% of ash and slag materials are disposed annually in the EU.

Also, at least 44% of the ash and slag materials is recycled annually in the EU, and 100% of their species. In 2016, 13.5 million tons of ash and slag products were disposed of in the European Union. They were used for the production of cement, concrete and in road construction. In Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands, one of the species of ash is utilized by 100%, in particular, it is used in construction instead of sand.
