During the month, Ukrainian consumers imported 8.44 thousand tons of long products, mainly from Turkey

In March 2024, imports of long products to Ukraine increased by 15.4% compared to the previous month – to 8.44 thousand tons. Imports increased by 64.7% compared to March 2023. This is evidenced by the data of the State Customs Service.

The cost of imports increased by 19.5% compared to February, and by 40.4% compared to the same month last year – to $10.54 million.

In January-March, imports of long products to Ukraine increased by 34.7% compared to the same period in 2023, to 25.8 thousand tons. Imports in monetary terms increased by 18.9% y/y – to $30.3 million.

The bulk of imports were angles, shapes and special profiles made of non-alloy steel (HS 7216) – 12.71 thousand tons worth $10.98 million. Supplies of such products to Ukraine in March increased by 145% m/m, while in March 2023, they were not imported. Import costs amounted to $3.95 million (+118.3% m/m). Turkey is the key supplier of angles, shapes and special profiles, accounting for 56.9% of supplies in monetary terms.

In January-March, Ukrainian consumers also imported 4.67 thousand tons of other rods and bars of carbon steel, untreated, twisted (HS 7214) for $4.59 million, and in March – 1.26 thousand tons (-47.2% m/m, -29.4% y/y) for $1.83 million (+1.1% m/m, +13.5% y/y). Turkish producers shipped 57.5% of the total imports to the Ukrainian market.

Imports of other rods and bars of other alloyed steels (HS 7228) reached 2.86 thousand tons, worth $4.48 million. In March, the country imported 0.7 thousand tons (-37.2% m/m, -60% y/y) of the corresponding products worth $1.06 million (-37.8% m/m, -58.4% y/y). Turkey accounted for 34.9% of the relevant products.

These three types of long products accounted for more than 78% of total imports of the relevant products to Ukraine. Other product suppliers include Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, India, China, Malaysia, and others.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukraine increased imports of long products by 28% compared to 2022, to 167.13 thousand tons. Import costs increased by 17.4% y/y – to $174.61 million over the year. Most of all, the company imported angles, shapes and special profiles made of unalloyed steel (HS 7216) – 65.67 thousand tons for $56.84 million.
