Vitkovice Steel has booked 1 million tons per year of green slabs from Oman

Czech hot-rolled plate producer Vitkovice Steel has booked 1 million tons of green slabs to be produced in Oman by Vulcan Green Steel (part of the Jindal Steel Group). This is reported by Ocelarska Unie.

As noted, Vitkovice Steel has ambitions to become one of the first European producers of low-carbon rolled steel products produced with minimal environmental impact. Under the binding memorandum signed by the parties, the Czech company will be able to produce up to 1 million tons of slabs with a thickness of 230 to 300 mm per year from the modern Vulcan Green Steel plant in the coming years. Prices and technical terms of supply will be specified in separate agreements.

“Attracting a new supplier of raw materials produced using the latest technologies is a breakthrough strategic step that will allow us to produce and supply high-quality plates and billets made of environmentally friendly steel to the market,” said Radek Strouhal, CEO of Vitkovice Steel.

According to him, the company expects to strengthen its competitiveness and market position in this way.

«We have reserved 1 million tons per year under the memorandum. We have not yet reached this production volume and would like to produce about 600 thousand tons of steel this year, but this is our goal for the next few years,” explained Strouhal.

The Vulcan Green Steel steel complex in the Dukma Special Economic Zone (Oman) is scheduled to be completed in 2026. It will have an initial production capacity of 5 million tons of decarbonized steel per year. The plant will fully utilize renewable energy sources. The use of green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources will ensure a carbon footprint of less than 0.6-0.7 tons of CO2 per ton of crude steel.

Vítkovice Steel has been looking for and testing new slab suppliers for a long time, mainly during the period of closure of its own plant in 2015. This work has become particularly intense in the last two years. An important selection criterion is the carbon footprint.

Vitkovice Steel plans to build the first warehouses for its products in Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipro.
