UZ reconstructed and overhauled 470 km of tracks in 2022

In 2022, Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ) reconstructed and overhauled 470 km of railway tracks. This is stated in the press release of railway operator.

In addition, last year UZ electrified 82 km of tracks, which is a record for the last 10 years. Railway workers are also restoring the infrastructure destroyed by the enemy – 25 of the 69 destroyed bridges have been rebuilt.

“In 2013-2020, Ukrzaliznytsia electrified an average of only 3 km of tracks per year. This year, too, the length of the tracks, a record for the last 4 years, was rebuilt,” said Oleksandr Kamyshyn, chairman of the UZ’s board.

In 2022, the railways of Ukraine had to quickly respond to changes in cargo logistics and actively work on the development of infrastructure projects and border crossings in the west with EU countries and in the south with Moldova.

In particular, the Rava-Ruska section – the state border – has been restored, which will allow in the future to organize direct passenger connections between Lviv region and Warsaw and Lublin. The 1,435 mm track was repaired and restored to traffic on the 70 km section Kovel – Yagodyn – state border.

“Line 102 has been reconstructed – two railway sections connecting the Ukrainian city of Khyriv with Przemyśl in Poland. In the future, this will be the fastest route between several counties of the Polish Subcarpathian Voivodeship, and Ukraine will receive two additional crossings with Poland, thanks to which the export-import potential of our state will be increased,” the message say.

Rakhiv – Berlebash – state border and Teresva – state border precincts have been restored. These are additional routes between Ukraine and Romania, which in the future will become the third and fourth junctions on the border with Romania – the busiest direction. They also open up prospects for international routes and for new passenger routes between Uzhhorod and Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi.

“Thanks to the projects implemented last year, we now have a convenient connection with Moldova on the Berezyne – Basarabiaska section. This section is an alternative connection with the Danube ports of Reni and Izmail,” UZ summarizes.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2021, Ukrzaliznytsia increased capital repairs and reconstruction of railway tracks by 2 times compared to 2020 – up to 321.6 km. In particular, during the year, the railway operator increased track overhaul by 2.6 times y/y – up to 127.3 km, and reconstruction – by 72.6% y/y, up to 194.3 km. Previously, UZ planned to carry out modernization of 250 km of tracks and overhaul of 300 km.
