Ukrainian steelmakers reduced the export of long rolled products by 38.3% m/m in September

In September 2023, steel enterprises of Ukraine reduced the export of long rolled products by 38.3% compared to the previous month – to 40.4 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the export of such products fell by 31.8% m/m – to $28.65 million. This is evidenced by State Customs Service’s data.

Compared to September 2022, in September 2023, steel enterprises of Ukraine reduced the revenue from the sale of long rolled products by 40%. Export volumes decreased by 2% y/y.

In January-September 2023, Ukraine exported 386.52 thousand tons of long-rolled products worth $298 million. The revenue from the sale of products abroad decreased by 47.4% compared to the same period last year, and the volume of exports –by 32.2%.

In 9 months, hot-rolled bars and rods were exported the most (HS 7213) – 155.3 thousand tons for $99.6 million. In September, 8.24 thousand tons were shipped (-56.4% m/m) for $5.02 million (-54.9% m/m). Also, 93.67 thousand tons of carbon steel wire (HS 7217) were exported for $85.64 million, in September – 11.3 thousand tons (-2.3% m/m) for $8.8 million (-5.8% m/m).

The three leaders among types of long rolled products in terms of export volumes from Ukraine in January-September 2023 are closed by other carbon steel rods and bars, without further processing, twisted (HS 7214) – 86.9 thousand tons for $51.1 million. in September, steel companies reduced the export of such products by 59.9% compared to the previous month – to 12.45 thousand tons. Revenue from its shipment fell by 58.1% m/m – to $7.22 million.

The largest consumers of Ukrainian hot-rolled rods and bars for 9 months of 2023 are Romania and Poland – 40.3% and 26.6%, respectively, in monetary terms. Poland (38.7%) and Germany (20.3%) consumed about 60% of Ukrainian-made wire. Among the main buyers of other rods and bars are Moldova (23.5%) and Iraq (31.4%).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 steel enterprises of Ukraine reduced the export of long rolled products by 59.7% compared to 2021 – to 748.95 thousand tons. The revenue of steelmakers from the export of such products fell by 55% y/y – to $693.53 million. The most exported hot-rolled rods and bars in bundles (HS 7213) – 406.6 thousand tons for $310 million, which is 56.1% and 54.2% less, respectively, compared to the indicator of 2021.
