Ukrainian steelmakers exported 31.8 thousand tons of long rolled products in December 2022

In 2022, steel companies exported 748.9 thousand tons of long rolled products from Ukraine

In December 2022, steel enterprises of Ukraine reduced the export of long rolled products by 52.9% compared to the previous month – to 31.83 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the export of such products fell by 54.3% m/m – to $23.84 million. This is evidenced by the State Customs Service’s data.

In December 2022, exports of long-rolled goods from Ukraine decreased by 82.4% year-on-year, and export revenue decreased by 90.2%.

In 2022, Ukrainian steelmakers exported 748.95 thousand tons of long rolled steel, which is 59.7% less compared to 2021. The revenue of steelmakers from the export of such products fell by 55% y/y – to $693.53 million.

Hot-rolled wire rods and bars in bundles (Nomenclature code – 7213) were exported the most – 406.6 thousand tons for $310 million, which is 56.1% and 54.2% less, respectively, compared to 2021. Also, 177.9 thousand tons (-73.6% y/y) of other twisted wire rods and bars without further processing (Nomenclature – 7214) for $137.3 million (-69.8% y/y) were exported.

Carbon steel wire (Nomenclature 7217) closes the three leaders among types of long rolled products in terms of export volumes from Ukraine in 2022. During the year, steel companies increased the export of such products by 23.5% compared to 2021 – up to 99.84 thousand tons. The revenue from the export of wire rod increased by 35.5% y/y – up to $115.2 million.

Also, in 2022, the export of hot-rolled wire rods and bars from other alloyed steels (Nomenclature 7227) increased by 4.17 times – up to 12.97 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the shipment of such products increased by 4.08 times y/y – up to $9.62 million.

The largest consumers of Ukrainian hot-rolled wire rods and bars are Romania and Poland – 35.5% and 31.4%, respectively, in monetary terms. Moldova (20.5%), Poland (19.4%) and Romania (19%) consumed approximately 60% of other wire rods and bars without further processing. Among the main buyers of Ukrainian-made wire rods are Poland (36.3%), Germany (18.96%) and the Czech Republic (9.9%).

Export of long rolled products from Ukraine in 2022

After the Russian invasion, ferrous metals exports fell sharply due to the blockade of ports, logistical problems, as well as the destruction of the big plants in Mariupol – Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works. Now Ukrainian steelmakers are actively looking for new ways to export products, but the shipment can be made mainly to Europe, since most world markets are closed to Ukraine due to the inaccessibility of ports.

In 2021, revenue from the export of ferrous metals from Ukraine increased by 81.4% compared to the previous year – up to $13.96 billion.
