Ukrainian steelmakers increased the export of long rolled products by 59% m/m in May

In May 2023, steel enterprises of Ukraine increased the export of long rolled products by 59.2% compared to the previous month – up to 57.25 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the export of such products increased by 14.3% m/m – up to $40.35 million. This is evidenced by State Customs Service’s data.

Compared to May 2022, in May 2023, steel enterprises of Ukraine reduced the revenue from the sale of long rolled products by 18%. Export volumes increased by 16.8% y/y.

In January-May 2023, Ukraine exported 189,700 tons of long rolled products worth $164,6 million. The revenue from the sale of products abroad decreased by 50.8% compared to the same period last year, and the export volume – by 47.2%.

Hot-rolled rods and bars (Nomenclature – 7213) were exported the most in 5 months – 94.54 thousand tons for $63.36 million. In May, 22.9 thousand tons were shipped (+12.3% m/m) for $15.2 million (+8.3% m/m). Also, 50.53 thousand tons of carbon steel wire (Nomenclature – 7217) for $50.19 million, in May – 10.4 thousand tons (+6.7% m/m) for $9.74 million (+0.5% m./m.) were exported.

The three leaders among types of long rolled products in terms of export volume from Ukraine in January-May 2023 are closed by other carbon steel rods and bars, without further processing, twisted (Nomenclature – 7214) – 25.88 thousand tons for $16.41 million. in May, steel companies increased the export of such products by 14.7 times compared to the previous month – up to 18.3 thousand tons. The income from its shipment increased by 10.9 times m/m – up to $10.9 million.

The largest consumers of Ukrainian hot-rolled rods and bars in 5 months of 2023 are Romania and Poland – 48.49% and 25.35%, respectively, in monetary terms. Poland (37.45%) and Germany (20.44%) consumed about 60% of Ukrainian-made wire. Among the main buyers of other rods and bars are Moldova (32.8%), Romania (24.43%) and Iraq (14.05%).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 steel enterprises of Ukraine reduced the export of long rolled products by 59.7% compared to 2021 – to 748.95 thousand tons. The revenue of steelmakers from the export of such products fell by 55% y/y – to $693.53 million. The most exported hot-rolled rods and bars in bundles (Nomenclature – 7213) – 406.6 thousand tons for $310 million, which is 56.1% and 54.2% less, respectively, compared to the indicator of 2021.
