Ukrainian steelmakers increased the export of flat products by 46% m/m in September

In September 2023, steel enterprises of Ukraine increased the export of flat products by 46% compared to August 2023 – up to 158.9 thousand tons. In monetary terms, the export of such products increased by 29.9% m/m – up to $95.35 million. This is evidenced by State Customs Service’s data.

Compared to September 2022, in September 2023, steel enterprises of Ukraine increased the revenue from the sale of flat products by 3.6 times. Export volumes increased by 2.2 times y/y.

In January-September 2023, Ukraine exported 785,400 tons of flat rolled products worth $547.4 million. The revenue from the sale of products abroad decreased by 56.1% compared to the same period last year, and the export volume – by 46.7% y/y.

In 9 months, flat hot-rolled products without coating (HS 7208) – 591.6 thousand tons for $393.6 million was exported the most. In September, 126.7 thousand tons (+49.6% m/m) were shipped for $73.8 million (+34.4% m/m). 150.6 thousand tons of flat cold-rolled products without coating (HS 7209) for $102.3 million, in September – 29 thousand tons (+64.9% m/m) for $17.95 million (+57.4% m/m) alos were exported the most.

The three leaders among types of flat rolled products in terms of export volumes from Ukraine in January-September 2023 are closed by flat rolled products, with galvanic or other coating (HS 7210) – 41.2 thousand tons for $48.8 million. In September, metallurgical companies reduced the export of such production by 46.7% compared to the previous month – up to 2.98 thousand tons. Revenue from its shipment fell by 43.7% m/m – to $3.3 million.

Poland and Bulgaria are the largest consumers of Ukrainian flat hot-rolled rolled products without coating – 46.4% and 17.6%, respectively, in monetary terms. Poland (29.6%), Bulgaria (17.9%) and Portugal (7.9%) together consumed more than 60% of uncoated flat cold-rolled products. Poland (74%) and Romania (20.4%) are among the main buyers of Ukrainian-made rolled steel.

Steel enterprises of Ukraine in September 2023 increased the production of rolled products by 3.4% compared to the previous month – up to 523 thousand tons. In January-September 2023, Ukrainian steelmakers produced 3.93 million tons of rolled products, which is 16.9% less in compared to the same period in 2022.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 Ukrainian steelmakers exported 1.63 million tons of flat rolled steel, which is 73% less compared to 2021. The revenue of steelmakers from the export of such products fell by 73.5% y/y – to $1.35 billion. The largest consumers of products were Poland, Romania, Turkiye and Bulgaria.
