In January-August 2024, Ukrainian seaports increased cargo handling by 77.2% compared to the same period in 2023 – up to 66.8 million tons (37.7 million tons in January-August 2023). This is evidenced by the operational data of the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority” (USPA).
A total of 41.7 million tons of cargo handled were products of the Ukrainian agricultural sector, which emphasizes the importance of this industry for the national economy. 25.1 million tons were other products, in particular, from the mining and metals sector.
In August 2024, Ukrainian ports handled 6.8 million tons of cargo, which is more than double the results of August 2023, including 4 million tons of agricultural products exported to international markets.
In July 2024, Ukrainian ports handled 7 million tons of cargo, which is 2 times more than in July last year. In January-July, this figure reached 59.9 million tons (+2.2 times y/y) and was equal to the transshipment volumes for 12 months of 2023.
In July, Ukrainian Railways transported 1.295 million tons of iron ore to ports, and the total volume of export transportation amounted to 2.636 million tons.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian ports increased cargo transshipment by 5% y/y – to 62 million tons, with iron ore transshipment accounting for 5.9% of the total cargo turnover, 1.9 million tons. This can be considered the beginning of the industry’s recovery after the difficult year of 2022, when port cargo turnover fell by 2.6 times compared to pre-war 2021.
