Transportation of ferrous metals for the month amounted to 467,000 tons

In July 2024, Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) reduced the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 0.3% compared to the previous month – to 2.636 million tons. The figure increased by 81.4% compared to July 2023. This was reported to GMK Center by the press service of the railway operator.

The company transported 1.295 million tons of raw materials to seaports, or 49.1% of the volume of iron ore exports. The volume of land crossings was 1.341 million tons (50.9%).

In July, ferrous metals were exported for 467.1 thousand tons, up 6.2% month-on-month and 32.7% compared to July 2023. Ports exported 333.6 thousand tons of the relevant products (71.4% of total exports of ferrous metals), and land crossings – 133.5 thousand tons.

In total, in July 2024, UZ transported 13.61 million tons of cargo, which is 7.4% less than in the previous month, but 12% more than in the previous year. Since the beginning of this year, the volume of transportation in July is the lowest.

«Massive missile attacks have significantly affected the energy sector, certain industries, and transport infrastructure, which affects the dynamics of cargo transportation,» UZ said.

In export traffic, the company transported 6.39 million tons of cargo over the month, which is 6% less than in the previous month and 92.5% more than in the previous year. Iron ore ranks first in the structure of export transportation, accounting for 41.2% of the total volume of cargo handled. Grains are in second place – 2.13 million tons (33.3%), and construction materials are in third place – 481 thousand tons (7.5%).

In January-July 2024, export transportation of iron ore amounted to 20.51 million tons (+2 times y/y), grain – 20.86 million tons (+50.3% y/y), ferrous metals – 2.93 million tons (+9.5% y/y). In total, UZ transported 103.86 million tons of cargo over the period, up 25.6% y/y. The company transported 51.17 million tons of cargo for export (+62.3% y/y).

As a reminder, in 2023, Ukrainian Railways transported 148.4 million tons of cargo, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. The transportation of iron ore decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals – by 10.6% y/y, to 8.2 million tons, and grain – by 5.9% y/y, to 30.6 million tons.
