In January-June 2024, the seaports of Ukraine increased cargo transshipment by 2.2 times compared to the same period in 2023 – up to 59.9 million tons. This is evidenced by the operational data of the State Enterprise «Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority» (USPA).
«The figure for January-July is almost equal to the transshipment volumes for 12 months of 2023 (62 million tons),» the USPA said.
In July this year, 7 million tons of cargo were handled, which is 2 times more than in July last year. In particular, 4.2 mln tons were accounted for by agricultural products, which were exported to 46 countries.
In June 2024, Ukraine’s seaports handled 1.2 million tons of iron ore, up from 0.2 million tons in June 2023. The total cargo turnover of Ukrainian seaports for the month reached 7 million tons, which is 1.5 times higher than in the same period last year. Grain was the leading cargo transshipment type, with 4.4 million tons compared to 3.4 million tons a year earlier.
In June, cargo turnover through the Ukrainian sea corridor amounted to 5.6 million tons. In total, in 6 months of 2024, Ukrainian ports handled 53 million tons (31.2 million tons in 2023), handling 6,046 thousand vessels.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukrainian ports increased cargo transshipment by 5% y/y – to 62 million tons, with iron ore transshipment accounting for 5.9% of the total cargo turnover (1.9 million tons). This can be considered the beginning of the industry’s recovery after the difficult year of 2022, when port cargo turnover fell by 2.6 times compared to pre-war 2021.
