Ukrainian Railways transported 3 million tons of iron ore in November

In November 2023, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increased the transportation of iron and manganese ore in all modes of transportation by 2.5 times compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 3 million tons. This is stated in the carrier’s press release.

In total, the railroad operator transported 14 million tons of cargo during the month, up 33.8% y/y and 4% compared to October 2023. This is a record figure since the beginning of the large-scale invasion. The growth was recorded for all types of traffic.

«Another month we have positive dynamics and, as a result, a record figure for freight transported since the beginning of the large-scale war. It is important that, in addition to domestic transportation, exports, which are critically important for our country, have begun to grow. Thanks to the work of the Ukrainian sea corridor, grain exports have also increased,» said the head of the UZ board Evgen Lyashchenko.

In November, 7.3 million tons of cargo were transported domestically (+19% y/y), 6 million tons (+56.2% y/y) in export traffic, and 679 thousand tons (+35.4% y/y) in import traffic. Transit transportation increased by 2.2 times y/y – up to 65.5 thousand tons.

Among the leaders in total transportation last month, in addition to iron ore, are:

  • grain – 3 million tons (+13% y/y);
  • construction materials – 3 million tons (+61.8% y/y);
  • hard coal–- 2 million tons (-7.7% y/y).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 Ukrainian Railways reduced transportation of iron and manganese ore by 59.2% compared to 2021 – to 41.7 million tons. Volumes of transportation of ferrous metals last year decreased by 57.8% y/y – to 9.2 million tons. In total, during the year UZ transported 150.6 million tons of cargo, which is 52.1% less compared to 2021.
