In January-July 2024, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) reduced the volume of iron ore transportation through Ukrainian-Slovak railway border crossings by 16.5% compared to the same period in 2023 – to 5.21 million tons. This was discussed during an online meeting with representatives of UZ and Slovak carriers, Rail.insider reports.
Iron ore is the leader among the cargoes transferred to Slovakia. The second place goes to grain – 553 thousand tons (-18.7% y/y). The third place goes to coal with a volume of 194 thousand tons.
In total, in January-July, the railroad operator transported 6.64 million tons of cargo to Slovakia and back. This is a 13% decrease compared to the same period last year.
As a reminder, export transportation of iron ore by Ukrainian Railways amounted to 20.51 million tons (+2 times y/y), grain – 20.86 million tons (+50.3% y/y), ferrous metals – 2.93 million tons (+9.5% y/y). In total, UZ transported 103.86 million tons of cargo over the period, up 25.6% y/y. The company transported 51.17 million tons of cargo for export (+62.3% y/y).
As GMK Center reported earlier, UZ transported 148.4 million tons of cargo in 2023, down 1.5%, or 2.2 million tons, compared to 2022. Iron ore transportation decreased by 13.2% y/y – to 27.5 million tons, ferrous metals by 10.6% y/y – to 8.2 million tons, and grain by 5.9% y/y – to 30.6 million tons.
