Ukrainian Railways has introduced restrictions on iron ore transportation for US Steel Kosice

Ukrainian Railways (UZ) is introducing a temporary restriction on the transportation of iron ore and sinter ore, as well as iron ore concentrate to Slovakia. This is reported by Rail.insider with reference to the railway operator’s data.

The Convention will enter into force on December 8 and will remain in force until canceled. The temporary restriction will apply to products going to the Hanyska station in Kosice via Uzhhorod to the U.S. Steel Kosice steek plant.

In November 2023, Ukrainian Railways increased the transportation of iron and manganese ore by all modes of transportation by 2.5 times compared to the same period in 2022, up to 3 million tons. In total, the railroad operator transported 14 million tons of cargo during the month, up 33.8% y/y and 4% compared to October 2023. This is a record figure since the beginning of the large-scale invasion. The growth was recorded for all types of traffic. In November, 6 million tons of cargo were transported in export traffic (+56.2% y/y).

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 Ukrainian Railways reduced transportation of iron and manganese ore by 59.2% compared to 2021 – to 41.7 million tons. Volumes of transportation of ferrous metals last year decreased by 57.8% y/y – to 9.2 million tons. In total, the operator transported 150.6 million tons of cargo during the year, which is 52.1% less than in 2021.
