Ukrainian ports handled 45.8 million tons of cargo in January-May

Ukrainian ports handled 45.8 million tons of cargo in January-May 2024, according to preliminary data. This is stated in the report of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA).

These volumes are almost twice as high as in the same period in 2023.

The USPA noted that it will continue to work on expanding the range of cargo, establishing container and ferry transportation.

“Given a favorable security situation, we are striving to reach the average pre-war level of cargo turnover,” the statement said.

As a reminder, over the 9 months of the sea corridor’s operation (since August 2023), Ukraine has exported 50 million tons of cargo through it, and port workers have handled 1737 vessels. According to Yuriy Lytvyn, Head of the USPA, the ports of Greater Odesa have already received and dispatched 10 container ships, and this trend will continue. The agency is also working on expanding and restoring the pre-war cargo range.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Maersk Group, the world’s leading container shipping company, is launching the first container service to the ports of Greater Odesa after the outbreak of full-scale war. The company, in cooperation with a Ukrainian feeder operator, is using a 1,100+ TEU vessel to connect Chornomorsk port with the Romanian container terminal Constanta. At the same time, the Turkish shipping company Akkon has launched a feeder service with its own vessels to Chornomorsk.
