Ukraine saw a 60.5% y/y decline in long steel exports in Q1

In January–March 2026, Ukraine’s steelmakers reduced exports of long steel products by 60.5% compared to the same period in 2025, down to 69,580 metric tons. This is according to calculations by the GMK Center based on data from the State Customs Service.

37.7% of total long product exports consisted of other carbon steel bars and rods, not further worked, twisted (HS Code 7214)—26,230 metric tons (-59.7% year-on-year). 13,880 tons were shipped to Poland, 9,760 tons to Moldova, and 2,320 tons to Romania.

During this period, Ukrainian producers exported 19.25 thousand tons of unalloyed steel wire (HS 7217), which is 42.5% less year-on-year. The bulk of the production was shipped to Poland—4,870 tons. Another 4,350 tons were exported to Germany and 2,330 tons to Moldova.

16,290 tons (-73.6% year-on-year) of exports consisted of hot-rolled bars and rods made of carbon steel, in coils (HS Code 7213). Among the main consumers: Poland – 8,440 tons, Lithuania – 3,740 tons, Romania – 2,820 tons.

In March, exports of long products amounted to 28.47 thousand tons, which is 53.1% less compared to March 2025, but 28.8% more than the previous month.

Shipments of other carbon steel bars and rods, not further processed, twisted (HS 7214) amounted to 9.89 thousand tons (-64% y/y; -18.7% MoM), and wire of non-alloy steel (HS 7217) – 7.44 thousand tons (-30.1% y/y; +36.1% m/m), and hot-rolled bars and billets made of carbon steel, in coils (HS 7213) – 8.34 thousand tons (-54.8% y/y; +201% m/m).

Foreign exchange revenue from long product exports in January–March decreased by 55.8% y/y – to $52.95 million, and in March – by 48.7% y/y and increased by 31.7% m/m – to $21.5 million.

As a reminder, in 2025 Ukraine increased its exports of long steel products by 45.4% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 892,070 metric tons. Hot-rolled bars and rods made of carbon steel, in coils (HS Code 7213), accounted for 42.4% of total long steel exports—378,520 metric tons (+46.5% year-on-year). Foreign exchange earnings increased by 34.9% year-on-year, to $609.8 million.
