Ukraine increased flat rolled products’ exports by 6.1% y/y in January-May

According to GMK Center calculations based on data from the State Customs Service, Ukrainian steelmakers increased their exports of flat rolled steel by 6.1% year-on-year to 717,570 tons in January-May 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

More than 80% of exports are flat hot-rolled products (UKTZED – 7208) – 599.9 thousand tons, which is 6% more year-on-year. The main consumers of products during the period were Poland – 244.26 thousand tons, Bulgaria – 166.8 thousand tons, and Italy – 37.68 thousand tons.

Another 13% of shipments, or 93 thousand tons (+7.4% year-on-year), accounted for flat cold-rolled products (UKTZED – 7209). The key consumer of this product is Poland – 41.97 thousand tons. Another 13.73 thousand tons were exported to Bulgaria, and 9.96 thousand tons – to Italy.

During the period, 24.09 thousand tons of coated flat rolled products (HS code 7210) were also exported, which is 5.3% more y-o-y. 14.15 thousand tons of these products were shipped to Poland, 6.63 thousand tons to Romania, and 0.71 thousand tons to the Czech Republic.

In May, Ukrainian metallurgists exported 163.5 thousand tons of flat rolled products, which is 13.5% more than last year and 35.1% more than last month. Shipments of hot-rolled flat products amounted to 138.34 thousand tons (+17.2% y-o-y; +33.4% m-o-m), cold-rolled flat products – 21.41 thousand tons (-4.1% y-o-y; +62.6% m-o-m /m.), coated flat products – 3.71 thousand tons (+5.6% y/y; -3.9% m/m).

Revenue from flat steel exports in January-May 2025 decreased by 4.9% y-o-y to $400.51 million, while in May it increased by 4.7% y-o-y and 38.9% m-o-m to $98.06 million.

As GMK Center earlier reported, in 2024 Ukraine increased its exports of flat rolled steel by 36.1% compared to 2023, to 1.63 million tons. More than 80% of shipments were hot-rolled flat products – 1.363 million tons (+44.7% y-o-y). Another 12% or 201.71 thousand tons (+0.7% y-o-y) were flat cold-rolled products.
