Ukraine imported 50 thousand tons of long products in Q1

In January-March 2025, the Ukrainian long steel market showed a significant increase in imports, up 92.7% compared to the same period in 2024, to 49.7 thousand tons. The figure was up 20.4% quarter-on-quarter. This is based on GMK Center’s calculations based on data from the State Customs Service.

Angles, shapes and special profiles (HS 7216) accounted for the bulk of supplies, amounting to 26.88 thousand tons, up 111.5% y/y. Turkey supplied 22.67 thsd tonnes of the products to the Ukrainian market, Poland – 2.76 thsd tonnes, Germany – 0.5 thsd tonnes.

Also, 8.31 thousand tons of other rods and bars of carbon steel, without further processing, twisted (HS 7214) were imported, which is 78.1% more than in the previous year. Turkey imported 7.66 thousand tons of such products, Poland – 0.3 thousand tons, Bulgaria – 0.15 thousand tons.

Hot-rolled rods and bars made of carbon steel accounted for a small share of supplies, amounting to 5.1 thousand tons (0.05 thousand tons a year earlier). China supplied 5.05 thousand tons to Ukraine.

Thus, Turkey is the main supplier of long products to the Ukrainian market. Turkish deliveries of the relevant products to the Ukrainian market in 2024 are estimated at 108.87 thousand tons, which is more than 63% of total imports. In 2023, the trend was similar – 98.03 thousand tons, which corresponds to 63.9% of long products imports to Ukraine.

In March 2024, 25.07 thousand tons of long products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, up 3 times compared to March 2024 and 36.5% compared to the previous month. This is the highest figure since the beginning of the year. During the month, there was a significant increase in consumption of key imported items, including

  • angles, shaped and special profiles (HS 7216) – 14 thousand tons (+209.3% y/y; +46.4% m/m);
  • other rods and bars of carbon steel, untreated, twisted (HS 7214) – 6.66 thousand tons (+430% y/y, +870% m/m);
  • other bars and rods of other alloy steels (HS 7228) – 1.98 thousand tons (+177% y/y, +110% m/m).

The cost of importing long products in Q1 increased by 68.6% y/y – to $51.14 million. In March, the figure increased by 149% y/y and 46.5% m/m – to $26.3 million.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2024, Ukraine increased imports of long products by 12.1% compared to 2023, up to 171.9 thousand tons.

Angles, shapes and special profiles (HS 7216) accounted for the bulk of supplies, amounting to 76.69 thousand tons, up 47.9% y/y. Turkey supplied 57.88 thousand tons of the relevant products to the Ukrainian market (+25.8% y/y), Poland – 11.98 thousand tons (+9%), Germany – 2.38 thousand tons (+80.1%).

Also, 43.84 thousand tons of other rods and bars of carbon steel, without further processing, twisted (HS 7214) were imported, which is 29.7% less than in 2023. Turkey imported 35.99 thousand tons of such products (-20.7% y/y).
