Ukraine imported 117 thousand tons of long products in January-August

In January-August 2024, Ukraine increased imports of long steel products by 16.4% year-on-year – to 116.77 thousand tons. This is evidenced by data from the State Customs Service.

Most of all, angles, shaped and special profiles (HS 7216) were imported during the period – 51.96 thousand tons, which is 100.2% more than in January-August 2023. Turkey is the main supplier of these products – 40.08 thousand tons. Another 7.61 thsd tonnes were imported from Poland.

Also, Ukrainian consumers imported 26.67 thousand tons of rebar (HS 7214), down 41.9% y/y. Turkey shipped 20.34 thousand tons of rebar to the Ukrainian market, and China – 0.61 thousand tons.

Wire rod was among the top three imported long products, accounting for 12.56 thousand tons (+226.5% y/y). Almost the entire volume was supplied from Moldova – 9.66 thousand tons.

In August of this year, 18.48 thousand tons of long products were supplied to the Ukrainian market, down 6.2% month-on-month but up 103.6% y/y. Imports of rebar reached 2.65 thousand tons (-59.7% m/m, -31.3% y/y), wire rod – 2.61 thousand tons (+152% m/m, +2250% y/y), angles – 9.4 thousand tons (+21.9% m/m, +320% y/y).

Import costs for 8 months increased by 4.8% compared to January-July 2023 to $114.18 million, in August they amounted to $17.07 million, which is 4.8% less than in January-July and 44.5% more than in August.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Ukraine increased imports of long products by 28% compared to 2022, to 167.13 thousand tons. Import costs increased by 17.4% y/y – to $174.61 million over the year. Most of all, the company imported angles, shapes and special profiles made of unalloyed steel (HS 7216) – 65.67 thousand tons for $56.84 million.
