In 2023, Ukrainian steelmakers reduced exports of long products by 31.4% compared to 2022, to 523.84 thousand tons. Revenue from exports of the relevant products decreased by 45% y/y – to $395.15 thousand tons. This is evidenced by the data of the State Customs Service.
In December, 51.14 thousand tons of long products were shipped for export, up 15.3% month-on-month and 59.4% y/y. Export revenues of Ukrainian companies increased by 18.7% in the month to November 2023 and by 51.4% y/y – to $36.55 million.
Hot rolled bars and coils (HS 7213) were exported the most over the year, 209.97 thousand tons for $131.42 million. In December, the company shipped 21.97 thousand tons (+54.4% m/m) for $12.87 million (+56.3% m/m). The company also exported 126.48 thousand tons of carbon steel wire (HS 7217) for $112.66 million, in December – 13.12 thousand tons (+51.1% m/m) for $11.27 million (+55.2% m/m).
Other rods and bars of carbon steel, not further processed, twisted (HS 7214) – 119.91 thousand tons worth $70.36 million – are among the top three types of long products in terms of exports from Ukraine in January-December 2023. In December, steelmaking companies reduced exports of such products by 36% compared to the previous month, to 10.6 thousand tons. Revenue from shipments fell by 35.4% m/m – to $6.2 million.
Romania and Poland are the largest consumers of Ukrainian hot-rolled bars and rods in 12 months of 2023, accounting for 37.5% and 32.2% in monetary terms, respectively. Poland (38.9%) and Germany (20.4%) consumed about 60% of Ukrainian wire. The main buyers of other rods and bars were Moldova (24.1%) and Iraq (22.8%).
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022, Ukrainian steelmakers reduced exports of long products by 59.7% compared to 2021, to 748.95 thousand tons. Steelmakers’ revenue from exports of such products fell by 55% y/y – to $693.53 million. The largest exports were of hot-rolled coils and bars (HS 7213) – 406.6 thousand tons for $310 million, which is 56.1% and 54.2% less than in 2021, respectively.
