The checkpoint will primarily be designed for freight transport

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft agreement between Ukraine and Romania regarding the opening of a new international checkpoint Bila Tserkva – Sziget Marmatsia. It is stated in the notification of the Ministry of Development of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure.

The new checkpoint will primarily be designed for the passage of cargo vehicles. The first step to its opening is the approval of the draft agreement at the level of governments.

Construction will be carried out by the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure. Currently, a plot of land is being registered for these purposes, in the future they plan to develop the appropriate design and estimate documentation for the construction of a checkpoint and an access road to the border crossing. The preliminary estimate of the cost of the works is about UAH 1.6 billion.

«The disruption of logistics chains due to the Russian invasion and the increasing load on automobile checkpoints require us to make decisions regarding the development of border infrastructure. At the same time, the cargo flow to Romania already accounts for 18% among all neighboring countries of Ukraine and ranks second overall,» noted the Deputy Minister of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure Serhii Derkach.

He added that the new checkpoint will, in fact, be designed for the passage of 500 trucks per day.

There are currently five road checkpoints and one ferry checkpoint operating on the border with Romania. Only two of them issue trucks – Porubne – Siret and Dyakove – Halmeu. In general, they can pass no more than 400 trucks per day.

As GMK Center reported earlier, this year the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure is planning to carry out modernization of road checkpoints on the border with five countries, focusing primarily on the busiest routes.
