UAE has extended the ban on scrap exports for another three months

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has extended the ban on the export of scrap ferrous metals for another three months – until December 19, 2023. Kallanish reports about it with the reference to Dubai Customs.

The directive on the suspension of the export of raw materials applies to products under the codes 72041000, 72042100, 72042900, 72043000, 72044100, 72044900 and 72045000.

The UAE first imposed a four-month ban on scrap exports in May 2020. In the future, it was consistently continued in order to support the supply of raw materials for the country’s steel enterprises.

Exports continue despite the ban, mainly to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In recent months, Indian customs stopped customs clearance of scrap from the UAE, which led to a 60% drop in imports from the UAE in January-July compared to the same period in 2022, to 73.3 thousand tons. However, deliveries from the UAE to Pakistan and Bangladesh continue.

As GMK Center reported earlier, a consortium of Emirati companies, including CIM Steel Industry LCC, Rhino Steel, Metal Care Center Factory LCC and Aziz Steel, plan to build four steel plants in the United Arab Emirates in the industrial city of Umm Al Quwain. The capacities provide for the use of scrap in the production of steel.

Also, the United Arab Emirates in 2022 increased production of steel by 7.1% compared to 2021 – up to 3.2 million tons. The country took 40th place in the ranking of global steel producers by WorldSteel.
