In January-April 2022, Turkish steel plants reduced the import of pig iron from Ukraine by 20.1% compared to the same period in 2021, to 89.19 thousand tons, Steel Orbis reported, citing data from the Turkish Statistical Institute.
At the same time, despite the war, in April another 3.24 thousand tons of pig iron arrived from Turkey to Ukraine, which is 90.4% less than in April 2021.
In total, Turkish plants in January-April increased imports of pig iron by 51.6%, to 483.79 thousand tons.
Russia is the biggest supplier of pig iron to Turkey. It accounted for 48% of total deliveries. In January-April, Turkish factories imported 233.2 thousand tons of pig iron from Russia. This is 3.2 times more than in 2021.
In second place is Brazil – its share is 32% of total iron supplies, and in third place – Ukraine with a share of 18%.
Earlier GMK Center reported that, in 2021 Turkey increased imports of pig iron from Ukraine by 8.8% compared to 2020, to 295.5 thousand tons. Deliveries from Ukraine accounted for 25% of total iron supplies.
Turkey ranks seventh in the world in terms of steel production. According to World Steel, the country in 2021 increased steel production by 13% compared to 2020, to 40.4 million tons.
