In the first ten days of January, Turkey exhausted part of the EU’s import quotas for its steel products for the new quota period (January 1 – March 31). This is reported by SteelOrbis.
Turkey has already exceeded its quotas for organic coated sheets (15,543 tons) and hollow sections (97,299 tons). At the same time, for example, 1,095 tons of organic-coated sheets are awaiting clearance at EU ports.
The country has also exhausted its quota for large welded pipes (25B) of 14,767 tons, and used up its quotas for wire rod (116,423 tons) and gas pipes (48,889 tons) by 68.01% and 56.67%, respectively.
As for the “other countries” category, Taiwan has exhausted its quota for hot-rolled steel, and Egypt has used only 62.42% of these volumes (138,766 tons). Algeria has already used its entire quota for wire rod (18,012 tons).
In addition, the “other countries” category used 88.7%, 63% and 69.44% of its quotas for metal-coated sheets (4A) (466,862 tons), stainless bars and light profiles (5,096 tons) and large welded pipes (25B) (6,423 tons), respectively.
In December 2024, the European Commission initiated a functional review of the EU’s safeguard measures on imports of steel products. The review was initiated following a request from 13 member states in late November. They believe that such a procedure is necessary due to changes in trade flows.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in June this year, the EU officially extended its safeguard measures on steel imports for another two years, until the end of June 2026. The bloc also imposed a 15 percent restriction on imports of hot-rolled coils and wire rod under the remaining quarterly quota in the “other countries” category for any individual country.
