Transition to “Green” Hydrogen Could Transform the Steel Industry – Ferrexpo

Ferrexpo has made initial investments to explore the productive use of hydrogen. The company plans to use hydrogen as an energy source to support the production of iron ore pellets. Ferrexpo believes that the application of “green” hydrogen for the production of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) could transform the steel industry. This information comes from Fastmarkets, citing Nick Bias, the Group Head of Investor Relations and Corporate Communications.

«Ferrexpo has already made some initial investments to understand the opportunities that hydrogen usage in the production process can offer. However, we see certain risks associated with hydrogen investments during the current war in Ukraine,» Bias said.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Ferrexpo is considering the possibility of installing a pilot 3.2 MW electrolyser as part of its ambitious decarbonisation plan. This project was first announced in the company’s сorporate Responsible Business Report 2021.
