Sidenor accelerates decarbonization with acquisition of scrap recycling company

The move is part of the company's strategy to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability

Spanish steel company Sidenor Group has announced the acquisition of Barcelona-based Eplus, a company that recycles industrial scrap and waste. The move is part of Sidenor’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability, CincoDias reports.

Eplus has facilities covering more than 2,000 square meters and specializes in processing materials such as ferrous and non-ferrous metals, paper, cardboard and plastics, allowing them to be reused in the steel and other industries.

Earlier this year, Sidenor completed the acquisition of Miguel Martín, located in Fuenlabrada, Madrid, to secure its scrap supply. In addition, in 2022, the company acquired Aguilar Metal Recycling, which specializes in recycling various types of metals.

These acquisitions underscore Sidenor’s commitment to integrating recycling into its production chains, which helps reduce its carbon footprint and support the principles of a circular economy. By expanding its recycling capabilities, the company aims to ensure a steady supply of quality raw materials for its manufacturing processes while reducing its dependence on primary resources.

Sidenor is a leading producer of specialty steel grades in Europe, with production facilities in the Basque Country, Cantabria and Catalonia, as well as commercial offices in several European countries. The company is actively investing in research and development, seeking to introduce new products and optimize production processes to meet environmental standards.

The acquisition of Eplus is another step in Sidenor’s strategy to achieve more sustainable and environmentally responsible production in line with global trends in industrial decarbonization.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, Spain reduced steel production by 2.7% compared to 2022 – to 11.26 million tons. The average monthly steel production amounted to 938.5 thousand tons, while in the same period of 2022 the figure was 964.42 thousand tons (-2.69% y/y).
