Scrap collection in Ukraine increased by 5.8% y/y in January-September

In January-September 2023, the volume of scrap collection in Ukraine increased by 5.8% compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 878 thousand tons. Ukrainian Association of Secondary Metals’ (UAVtormet) data informs about it.

Export of scrap for 9 months amounted to 131.1 thousand tons, which is 3.7 times more y/y. Imports during this period fell by 50% y/y – to 0.8 thousand tons. Scrap supplies to Ukrainian steel enterprises decreased by 6.9% compared to January-September 2022 – to 703 thousand tons.

In September, the collection of scrap increased 2.6 times compared to September 2022 –up to 123.5 thousand tons. The export of raw materials during this period amounted to 13.6 thousand tons, which is 2.8 times more than y/y, and import – 0.2 thousand tons (in September 2022, raw materials were not imported).

Scrap supplies to Ukrainian steel plants for September 2023 increased by 2.4 times y/y – up to 101.9 thousand tons.

Technological stocks of scrap at industrial enterprises are estimated at 25,000-30,000 tons as of October 1, 2023. Estimated technological needs of steelmakers in scrap ferrous metals are fully met, with an excess of 12.5%.

UAVtormet predicts that scrap collection in Ukraine in 2023 will amount to 1.25 – 1.3 million tons. Domestic supplies of raw materials to steel plants will be at the level of 1 – 1.05 million tons.

«In 9 months of 2023, an increase in the volume of ferrous scrap collection is noted. This trend is due to high business activity on the market due to the increase in purchase prices by some metallurgical enterprises, as well as active export activity,» the message says.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022 volumes of scrap collection in Ukraine decreased by 75.9% compared to 2021 – to 996.7 thousand tons. The export of raw materials for the year decreased by 11.4 times y/y – to 53.6 thousand tons, import – by 92.1% y/y, to 1.8 thousand tons. Domestic supplies of raw materials to domestic steel mills decreased by 73% – to 895.7 thousand tons.
