Romania has approved the sale of ArcelorMittal Hunedoara to UMB Steel

In April of this year, the Romanian Competition Council approved the sale of ArcelorMittal Hunedoara to UMB Steel, a subsidiary of the UMB Group. This was announced in a statement by the regulator.

The assets of ArcelorMittal Hunedoara covered by the agreement consist primarily of production equipment and facilities, materials and inventory, as well as land and buildings at the plant in Hunedoara County, along with certain real estate properties outside the plant.

Following its analysis, the Council concluded that the transaction does not create significant obstacles to effective competition in the Romanian market or a substantial part thereof, and that there are no serious doubts regarding its compatibility with a normal competitive environment.

UMB Group operates in sectors such as the design and construction of roads and bridges, construction, the production of ferrous metals and concrete products for construction, and electricity generation.

At the end of last year, according to a report by the Bucharest Stock Exchange, a memorandum of understanding was signed for the sale of ArcelorMittal Hunedoara’s assets to UMB Steel for €12.5 million plus VAT.

As a reminder, ArcelorMittal Hunedoara ceased operations in September 2025. The company cited high energy costs and a sharp decline in its order book. As noted, the decision reflects an assessment of the deteriorating market situation, which continues to be shaped by persistently high electricity costs, limited government support, and growing competitive pressure from imports.
