Qarmet produced 3 million tons of steel in January-October

Qarmet (formerly ArcelorMittal Temirtau) smelted 3 million tons of steel in January-October 2024, which is equal to the annual production volume of 2023. The figure was achieved due to the modernization of key equipment, the company said in a press release.

In October, the plant completed a major overhaul of BOF vessel No. 1, which was the second large-scale project under the modernization program.

“Within one year, we have repaired two converters, which is a difficult but necessary step to ensure stable and reliable production. Now all three of our BOF vessels are operating at full capacity,” said Andrey Berg, Director of the Steel Department.

The new BOF vessel No. 1 has an increased volume (from 234 to 270 cubic meters), which allows for increased smelting capacity and higher efficiency. The installation of a modern gas cleaning system helped reduce emissions and improve environmental standards.

In May 2024, the updated BOF vessel No. 2 was put into operation, bringing the plant’s smelting capacity to 45 smelts per day. After completion of the repair of BOF vessel No. 1, the company has provided even greater flexibility in production.

“Repairs and modernization are strategic investments aimed at long-term development and maintaining our leading position in the industry. We are grateful to our specialists for their high level of professionalism and teamwork,” added Berg.

In January-September, Qarmet increased its steel production by 14% year-on-year – to 2.6 million tons. Coal production for 9 months reached 4.7 million tons, up 2% y/y, and concentrate production increased by 17% y/y – to 2.3 million tons. Thus, the company produced about 400 kt of steel in October.

Qarmet plans to increase steel production to 3.5 million tons in 2024. The company plans to ship 3.2 million tons of steel products to customers this year.

Previous plans envisaged a 13% increase in steel production compared to 2023, up to 3.3 million tons, and a 10% increase in iron ore concentrate production, up to 10 million tons. At the same time, coal production is expected to decline by 2%.
