Nucor and NuScale Power will work together on a green transition

US steel corporation Nucor and NuScale Power have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the feasibility of deploying small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) power plants at Nucor’s electric arc furnace plants. It is stated in a post on the NuScale Power site.

Companies will assess site suitability, power line connectivity, and capital costs for potential NuScale power plants. In addition, NuScale will explore the possibility of locating its NuScale Power Modules manufacturing facility adjacent to the Nucor facility.

The memorandum also includes an expanded manufacturing partnership to supply Econiq, Nucor’s carbon-neutral steel products, to NuScale projects.

According to Leon Topalyan, chairman, president and CEO of Nucor, the corporation is committed to supporting the development of transformational technologies that will provide a safe, reliable and affordable supply of carbon-free electricity.

“We look forward to identifying how our SMR technology can best be used in Nucor’s complex steelmaking operations and how our companies will work together to ensure a sustainable future,” said John Hopkins president and director of NuScale.

In 2022, Nucor invested $15 million in NuScale. The agreement between the companies strengthens the partnership and highlights the growing global interest in SMR among industry leaders, the announcement said.

As GMK Center reported earlier, Outokumpu and Fortum will work on the decarbonization of steel production. Companies explore the possibility of power supply through small modular reactors The agreement starts a long-term process with the aim of accessing the potential construction of SMRs in Finland. The purpose of the first stage is to identify potential business models and technical solutions for further development, any potential investment decisions will be made later.
