16 enterprises of the Metinvest Group, in particular, Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol, filed lawsuits with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against Russia for the damage caused by the Russian Federation to the property and ownership of the Group in Mariupol and other territories of Ukraine from 24 February. The company’s website reports about it.
In addition, more than 10 Group companies will file similar lawsuits by the end of 2022.
Metinvest claims that the Russian Federation violates the rights of the company in accordance with Art. 1 of Protocol 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights, causing significant damage and destruction to assets, depriving the Group of control over them, and in many cases de facto depriving the company of ownership of the assets, as well as the ability to use them for commercial purposes and generate income.
“Therefore, each Group’s company that has suffered losses as a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine from February 2022 is filing a lawsuit against Russia to hold it accountable for the destruction it has caused to the Group’s assets and to seek fair compensation for the damage caused by Russian aggression,” it is stated in the published statement.
On June 23, 2022, the co-owner of Metinvest, Rinat Akhmetov, filed a similar claim with the ECHR. The group supports his claim and considers the statements of their companies as complementary. In addition, the company acts in full coordination with the shareholder during the consideration of cases.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in May, Metinvest Group was preparing lawsuits against Russia for the destruction of Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works. The lawsuits estimation is about $10 billion.
Also, as of the end of August, according to the monitoring data of the Ukrainian League of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (ULIE), more than 30% of industry in Ukraine did not work due to the war and destruction caused by the armed aggression of the Russian Federation.
