Megasa invests almost €100 million in a new furnace at the plant in Zaragoza

Spanish rolled steel producer Megasa has announced that it will invest nearly €100 million ($108.8 million) in a new preheating furnace at its Megasider plant in Zaragoza in 2023-2024. Eurometal informs about it with the reference to Kallanish.

The company will also replace the existing rolling mill with equipment based on environmentally friendly heating technology. The new workshop will be designed for the production of a wide range of commodity bars.

In 2022, Megasider produced 500,000 tons of rolled steel, and net sales increased by 23.1%  – up to €400 million. According to Eduardo Piñera, the executive director of the steel mill, these results allowed us to plan significant investments in expanding the range of products and technology, focused on improving energy efficiency.

The German SMS Group will handle the update. The project includes a furnace with stepping beams with a capacity of 120 tons/year. In addition, the company will provide combustion control and management systems, as well as ZeroFlame HY2 burners, which can run on both natural gas and a mixture of gas and hydrogen in any ratio.

The Megasider plant in Zaragoza produces commodity bar as well as a wide range of rebars and steel profiles.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the Turkish company Tufan Metalurji plans in 2024 to start production of billets. The company intends to build an enterprise in the organized industrial zone of Ceyhan (Adan province). The investment budget of the project is $17.94 million.
