Liepaja Port reduced iron ore transshipment by 36.9% y/y in January-October

The Liepaja seaport (Latvia) reduced the transshipment of iron and manganese ore by 36.9% in comparison with the same period in 2022 – to 35.1 thousand tons in January-October 2023. This is evidenced by the data published on the port’s website.

Transshipment of other metals in the port of Liepaja decreased by 21% y/y in January-October – to 7.5 thousand tons. Processing of ferrous metals and iron alloys did not take place during this period, while 10.3 thousand tons of non-ferrous metals were transshipped, which is 88.8% less y/y.

In general, in January-October, workers of the Liepaja port handled 52.9 thousand tons of cargo from the iron and steel complex, which is 67% less compared to the previous year.

The total cargo turnover of Liepaja port for 10 months of 2023 was 5.93 million tons. This is 6.5% less compared to January-October 2022. Grain and cereal products were processed the most – 2.73 million tons (+7% y/y). In the second place are building materials – 632.2 thousand tons (-5.2% y/y), and in the third place – wood pellets – 221.8 thousand tons (+8.1% y/y). ).

Processing of bulk cargoes fell by 1.9% y/y for the year – to 4.1 million tons, general – decreased by 14.9%, to 1.59 million tons, and bulk–- decreased by 18.3%, to 231.4 thousand tons.

The Port of Liepaja is one of the three largest ports in Latvia and is located on the Baltic Sea coast. In 2022, the Port of Liepaja handled 58.7 thousand tons of iron and manganese ore, up 11.5 times year-on-year. In total, the port handled 7.61 million tons of cargo over the year, up 7.8% compared to 2021.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the Port of Riga (Latvia) increased iron ore transshipment by 16.8% in 2022 – to 954.6 thousand tons compared to the same period in 2021. Transshipment of scrap metal, metal products and ferroalloys in the port of Riga amounted to 516.6 thousand tons in 12 months of 2022, down 28.7% compared to 2021.
