Liberty Galati
On December 16, 2025, the court in Galați (Romania) once again extended the bankruptcy protection proceedings for local steel producer Liberty Galați, without recording any practical results of the restructuring. The next review of the case is scheduled for March 25, 2026. This was reported by Monitourul De Galati.
In fact, the new resolution almost completely repeats the previous ruling from September, with only the dates changed. The court took note of the administrator’s report and obliged him to continue to report regularly to creditors. At the same time, the decision makes no mention of the resumption of production, the achievement of financial targets, or the making of payments.
The court also did not confirm any changes to the restructuring plan and did not record the previously announced intentions regarding the possible sale of the plant’s assets. Thus, this is not an assessment of the real state of the enterprise, but only a formal continuation of the procedure.
Liberty Galați came under court protection in the spring of 2025 due to serious financial difficulties. This procedure was supposed to give the company time to negotiate with creditors and resume operations. The restructuring plan was approved by the court, but its key elements, in particular the restart of production, were never implemented.
The latest postponement means that the plant will get a few more months without any visible changes in the situation.
“While the court is recording reports and waiting, the risks are growing for creditors and employees, who are left without a clear understanding of the future of the company,” the statement said.
Earlier, it was reported that Romania had launched an investigation into suspected fraud involving €300 million in CO2 emission certificates, involving the country’s largest metallurgical plant, Liberty Galați. Investigators allege that members of Liberty Galați’s management embezzled company funds and created tax evasion schemes.
