Kazakhstan reduced steel production by 32.6% m/m in September

Kazakhstan’s metallurgical enterprises reduced steel production by 32.6% compared to the previous month, to 285,780 tons, according to the results of September 2025. Compared to September 2024, the figure decreased by 20%. This was reported by Kallanish, citing data from the Ministry of Economy’s statistical committee.

Flat steel production increased by 2.7% y/y and 6.4% m/m to 214.39 thousand tons.

During January-September, steel production in Kazakhstan decreased by 0.5% compared to the same period in 2024, to 3.08 million tons. Rolled metal production for the first nine months increased by 4.9% year-on-year, to 2.21 million tons.

It should be recalled that in 2024, Kazakhstan increased steel production by 9.5% compared to 2023, to 4.17 million tons. Flat steel production last year increased by 18.2% compared to 2023, to 2.9 million tons.

The Kazakh metallurgical plant Qarmet exceeded its production plan for the year by 15% for pig iron, 15% – for steel, 18% – for coke, 12% – for sinter, and 17% – for the section rolling shop. The improved performance of this key industry player has a positive impact on the country’s overall production volume.

In Q1, Qarmet’s steel production increased by 30% y/y, and product shipments by 23% y/y. Overall, the company plans to produce 3.7 million tons of steel in 2025.

Last year, Qarmet and the Chinese company Xinxing Ductile Iron Pipes Co agreed to build a cast iron pipe plant in Kazakhstan. The plant’s design capacity will be 200,000 tons per year, and the total investment will be $161 million.

The company also signed a $1 billion agreement with China Metallurgical Group to establish long-term and comprehensive cooperation in the iron and steel industry.
